Three waters, three worlds

Southeast Asia, Far East and the Indian Ocean are culturally and climatically very different. We'll show you which region fits which season.

Southeast Asia
01

Southeast Asia

Singapore, Bangkok/Laem Chabang, Ho Chi Minh City, Phuket, Langkawi, Bali. The entry-level Asia region: warm tropics year-round, short sailings, no lingering jetlag. Usually departs Singapore (direct flight from Zurich approx. 12h).

Far East
02

Far East

Japan (Yokohama, Kobe, Nagasaki), South Korea (Busan, Jeju), Shanghai, Hong Kong, Taiwan. Highly developed metropolises, cherry blossom, autumn foliage and Michelin-dense cuisine. Best time March–May and October–November.

Indian Ocean
03

Indian Ocean

Maldives, Sri Lanka, Seychelles, Mauritius, Réunion. Dream beaches, snorkelling and yoga retreats under palm trees – often combined with Dubai as departure port. Season November–April.

When is Asia at its best?

Asia has three clearly distinct regions with their own monsoon and temperature patterns. Pick a month and see which sub-region is ideal.

Ideal
Good
Off-season
Southeast Asia
Off-season
Southwest monsoon: high humidity, daily rain showers, fewer sailings. Tropics-experienced travellers still enjoy it.
Far East
Best time
Cherry blossom in spring (March–May) or vibrant autumn foliage (October–November). 15–22 °C, dry, Japan and Korea at their finest.
Indian Ocean
Good time
Shoulder months: still warm and sunny, but with slight rain risk. A good alternative to the expensive peak season.

Why Asia is the most intense cruise

No region offers so much contrast in such a small space: temples, skylines, beaches and street food rotate on a daily rhythm.

01
Far away – but reachable
Direct flights from Zurich to Singapore, Bangkok or Hong Kong in 11–12h. One flight, one transfer at most – and you're right in the middle of it. Ideal as a two-week reset.
02
Cuisine at its finest
From Bangkok street food for 2 CHF to a Michelin-starred restaurant in Tokyo: Asia has arguably the best food culture in the world. Served on board – experienced on shore – nowhere else so densely packed.
03
History and future
Thousand-year-old temples next to LED skylines, rice terraces beside high-speed trains. Asia shows you in one day what other regions can't in a week – every port a different century.
04
Hardly any sea days
The Southeast Asian archipelagos lie close together: you have a new port almost every day, only short overnight sailings in between. Perfect if you want to see a lot and avoid boredom.

Asia cruises – your questions

Southeast Asia November–March (dry season, 28–32 °C), Far East (Japan/Korea) March–May for cherry blossom or October–November for autumn foliage, Indian Ocean November–April. Avoid the southwest monsoon (June–September) in the tropics and the late-summer typhoon season in the Far East.

Given the long flight time we recommend 12–17 nights. That makes the journey worthwhile and gives you enough time to see two or three countries. Shorter loops from Singapore (5–7 nights to Thailand and Malaysia) work if you're already combining with a stopover.

The main departure ports are Singapore, Hong Kong, Tokyo/Yokohama, Bangkok/Laem Chabang and Dubai (for the Indian Ocean). From Zurich there are direct flights to Singapore, Bangkok and Hong Kong (11–12h). We can organise flights and transfers to the ship on request.

During the main season (November–March in Southeast Asia) the monsoon is not an issue. Outside these windows expect daily, mostly brief showers and heavier seas on open stretches. Cruise lines deliberately move their fleets along the monsoon rhythms – our recommendations always follow the dry season.

Royal Caribbean and Celebrity with modern ships, Holland America and Princess (premium), MSC and Costa with a large fleet, TUI Cruises (Mein Schiff) with German-speaking service, Crystal, Silversea and Regent Seven Seas in the luxury segment. For Japan there are also specialists like Viking and Oceania.

Swiss passport: Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Hong Kong and Japan are visa-free for short stays. China and India require visas – transit or group visas often exist for shore excursions. Vaccination recommendations vary by route – we refer to the tropical institute in Zurich, Basel or Bern for tailored advice.

Yes, large ships from Royal Caribbean, MSC or Princess have extensive kids' clubs and family cabins. Keep in mind the long flight (11–14h) and tropical heat – ideal from school age upwards. Shore excursions in Southeast Asia are mostly family-friendly (elephant sanctuaries, beaches, aquariums).
